The family story goes, that Robert left his wife Margaret and family before May was born. Margaret couldn't prove he was dead or alive and was unable to get a pension. It is said - and you know families didn't always give out the correct info - that Robert's family paid his fare to Australia - for what reason I don't know. I cannot find him in U.K. death lists, so presume that he did leave the country.
