She had a hard life being left alone with three young daughters aroundthe end of the first world war. She had to go out to work to keep themand lived in rented accommodation all her life.
When she was in her sixties she came to live with us in Colne and thenbegan the delights of treacle toffees in bed. She was very good atforward rolls across the bed!! She was so sadly missed when she died.

Very little is known of Uncle Mathias. I do remember a picture of himstanding at the door of a house in Blackburn with one if his sisters, Ithink Maria. What do you know just found the photo.
On the night of the 1881 Census he was staying with his grandmother(Elizabeth Kendall) presumably as his mother had just had a new baby boy(John William). As Mathias is an unusual name he is the first Duerden Ifound which quickly lead me to his mother's maiden name.
Joseph James was born in Arkendale and is found on the 1881 census livingwith his mother a widow and his elder brother Thomas. Joseph is a thispoint and agricultural labourer and by the end of the 1880s was workingas a labourer for J H Tate of Knaresborough.
On the 30 October 1890 Joseph joined the south division of ManchesterCity Police as PC 'D' 174.
In 1899 he is shown residing at his wife's business at 116 Upper Brook StChorlton but by 1901 he is living at 44 Parkfield Ave. Rushholme alongwith his two sons and his mother by this time she is aged 75.He resigned from the police force19 Feb 1906. This I am told was notbecause of any wrong doing on his part as resignations were common whenmen found better or less arduous work.
