Standing on what was once called Serpentine Road were a pair of semi-detached houses; today the Royal British Legion owns them both, although one property is leased to the Royal Navy and is today used as their social club. However, the 1871 census shows the semi detached house (on the right of the photo) as home to the Duerden family.Edward Duerden, a British Subject was head of the household and had been born in Bermuda 1828.
Sometime between 1828 and 1851, Edward must have travelled to England from Bermuda as by1851 he is living at 3 Egerton Place, Liscard, Cheshire, the home of his grandparents David S. and Jean Wylie, both of whom have been born in Kilmarnock, Scotland 1773 and 1768 respectively.
By 1861 Edward had married Clara H. nee Whitworth who had been born in Rochdale, Lancashire 1832 and the 1861 census shows the couple resident in Claughton Road.
By 1871, Edward and Clara H. are resident at Elmslea and have four surviving children; Lillian and her brother Francis were both born in Egremont, 1854 and 1856 respectively. Constance and Henry were much younger and had both been born in Birkenhead in 1869 and 1870 respectively.
The Duerden’s had a younger son; Edward Wylie born in Birkenhead in 1866 but Edward had sadly died in 1870.
Edward Duerden was self-employed as a lard refiner and a provision dealer. His son Francis was also employed in his fathers company, which traded under the name of Duerden Edward & Son and was situated at 9 &11 Oriel Street, Liverpool.
The Duerden family was still in residence in 1881 but by now Clara’s father, Richard Whitworth, had come to live with them. Richard Whitworth had been born in Rochdale 1806 and like Clara’s husband Edward, had been employed as a lard refiner.
On the eve of the 1881 census, the Duerden family had visitors, Clara and Edgar Smalley. Clara was born in Manchester in 1852 and Edgar in Sale, Cheshire 1878.
The Duerden’s employed one servant Rebecca Daws, born West Derby, Liverpool 1857.Richard Whitworth died in Birkenhead in early 1883 and by 1891 the Duerden family had moved to 8 Longlands Terrace, Longlands Avenue, Liscard. Henry was now employed in the family lard refining business as a cashier.
Edward Duerden died in 1893 and Henry and his elder, married brother Francis were left to carry on the lard refining business. Francis lived at 8 Comley Avenue, Egremont Wirral.
Clara H. Duerden died in Conway, Denbighshire, North Wales 1911.
